Page 5 of 5 GD: How do you make a hula-hoop? What material gets used? What’s inside the hoop? What kind of material do you use to cover the outside? EL: You can find the recipe to make hula-hoops online. The best resource for anything hula-hoop is www.hooping.org. The hoop is made from irrigation pipe that I measure, cut, heat and put together. Most people use different tapes to design the hoops. I prefer to find alternative materials to use along with the tape to create multi-textured designs. I don’t put anything purposely inside mine but I can’t say nothing ever falls in. I should make each one a time capsule.
GD: What kind of designs have you used on your hoops?
EL: I design hoops that look hot, hoops that I wouldn’t mind being seen with walking down the street. Hoops that I wouldn’t mind grinding all up against my neck, waist, shoulders and knees. Hoops that I wouldn’t mind giving a ride to and making room in the car for. My signature hoops are skulls, flames, leopard print, zebra print and camouflage, just to name a few. Miguel wants to make a hoop out of rope and rocks. I’ll keep you posted on how that one comes out.
GD: Do you do custom work?
EL: I would say 50% are custom made to order and 50% are my creations sold as is.
GD: Have you thought about branching out into other fields? Frisbees or yo-yos perhaps?
EL: No. I don’t play with Frisbees or yo-yos. I’ll only ever love to make what I love to use.
GD: What advice would you give someone who's ready to quit school and dive head first into the adult sized, designer hula-hoop industry?
EL: I would suggest quitting school and doing some heroin first. Once all your friends are dead and you get out of prison there will be no one to stand in your way!
Actually I would recommend everyone trying to make their own if they have the means. Getting all your materials locally and trying out new ideas will keep the “revolution” fresh. Hoops alone aren’t going to make you your first million so you could probably open a strip club and invest in some stocks too.
GD: Have you ever seen Hudsucker Proxy? 'You know...for kids' EL: Of course! http://www.philthyhoops.com/
